What a Paragraph Actually Is

A paragraph is not just a block of text. A paragraph is a complete unit of thought — one idea, fully developed. Every paragraph you write for the rest of your life — in essays, emails, proposals, arguments — should follow the same fundamental structure.

Three-Part Paragraph Structure

1. Topic Sentence — the opening sentence. States exactly what this paragraph is about and makes a specific, arguable claim. Every sentence that follows must support it. If a sentence doesn't support the topic sentence, it doesn't belong.

2. Body — Supporting Sentences — minimum 3–5 sentences providing evidence (facts, quotes, examples, data), explanation (your analysis connecting evidence to the claim), and elaboration.

3. Concluding Sentence — wraps up the idea, reinforces the claim in new words, transitions toward what comes next. Never just copy the topic sentence.

What Makes a Strong Topic Sentence

A topic sentence = topic (what you're discussing) + controlling idea (your specific, arguable claim about it).

Weak:
'Ancient Kemet was important.' — too vague; important HOW?
'This paragraph is about the Moors.' — announces topic, makes no claim.
'Slavery was bad.' — obvious; not specific enough to develop.

Strong:
'The mathematical and engineering achievements of Ancient Kemet prove that African civilization established the scientific foundation upon which all subsequent civilizations built.'
'The 700-year Moorish presence in Europe directly produced the conditions for the Renaissance by reintroducing Greek scientific texts that European scholars had lost during the Dark Ages.'

PEEL Structure

P — Point: Your topic sentence — state your specific claim
E — Evidence: Specific facts, quotes, examples, or data supporting the claim
E — Explanation: Your analysis — how does this evidence prove your point?
L — Link: Connect back to the main argument or transition to the next idea

Writing Vocabulary

Controlling idea — your specific angle or argument within the topic
Evidence — specific support: facts, statistics, quotes, examples
Explanation — your analysis connecting evidence to the claim
Thesis — the central claim of an entire essay
Active voice — subject performs action: 'The Kemetic people built the pyramids.'
Passive voice — subject receives action: 'The pyramids were built.'
